Information the site receives
- Member accounts: email address, authentication information, chosen public username, membership status and earned member mark.
- Contributions: memories, questions, place details, publication and contact permissions, and any photographs, video or audio you choose to upload.
- Forum activity: topics and replies connected to your public username.
- Newsletter signup: the email address you submit and the information needed to manage subscription status.
- Site measurement: page path, referring website’s host name, campaign tags and a small set of actions such as newsletter signup, YouTube click or membership creation.
- Technical information: ordinary request and security data handled by the site’s hosting, database and email systems, such as IP address, browser type, timestamps and error logs.
What is public
Your email address and account credentials are not displayed. Your chosen username and member mark can appear with public forum activity. A case-file contribution appears publicly only after review and when the submission includes permission to publish. Approved media, captions and credits can appear with that contribution.
How information is used
Information is used to operate member accounts, prevent abuse, review and publish permitted contributions, maintain case alerts, send requested newsletters, answer support requests and protect the archive. Lost Places Society does not sell personal information.
Browser storage
The site uses session storage to keep a member signed in while the browser tab or window remains open. Local storage may preserve an unfinished contribution draft, interface preferences and limited display state. You can clear this data in your browser. Clearing it may remove a saved draft or sign-in state.
Traffic measurement
The site keeps limited first-party event records so the owner can tell which pages are being reached and whether a YouTube or newsletter path is useful. These records can include the page path, referring host, campaign tags and event name. The analytics record does not store an email address, full referring URL, cookie identifier, browser fingerprint, IP address or user-agent string. Hosting and security providers may still process ordinary request logs as described above.
Service providers and external content
Member accounts, database records and private uploads are handled through Supabase. The website is served through its hosting provider. Story pages may include privacy-enhanced YouTube embeds, and the homepage map requests map tiles from OpenStreetMap. Those services can receive normal web-request information when their content loads. External links are governed by the destination’s privacy practices.
Retention and deletion
Account and contribution information is kept as long as reasonably needed to operate the archive, honor permissions, maintain security and resolve disputes. Public historical material may need editorial review before removal so credits, corrections and linked discussions are handled responsibly. To request account deletion or review of personal information, email members@lostplacessociety.com. For a photograph, rights or public-page concern, use the takedown process.
Security and choices
No online system can promise perfect security. Use a unique password and do not post sensitive information in the forum. You can unsubscribe from a newsletter message, stop following a case from its page, request account help, or ask for a privacy review at any time.
Changes to this policy
This page may be updated as the site changes. The effective date above will change when the policy is materially revised.
